Which is the best mask to use to prevent Maskne outbreak?
Covid’s birthday has just passed! This means that we have been wearing masks every single day (if you head out) for almost a year! Jokes aside, we understand your pain and we are all in this together. Not to worry because in this article, we will be sharing with you which masks cause more maskne and how we can better prevent them!
What is Maskne and how is it formed?
According to www.dictionary.com, Maskne refers to any acne or skin irritation that results on a person’s face from long hours of wearing masks, especially on areas covered by the mask – around and on the nose and chin. Maskne can also be caused by a mixture of stress, sweat, friction and other repeated pressures on the skin.
Which masks cause more Maskne?
There are many different types of masks out there:
-Surgical mask
-Disposable face mask
-Cloth mask
-N95 respirator
-Home-made masks (eg. fashioned out from neck gaiters, scarves and bandanas)
“Generally, material which is soft and smooth causes less maskne, and the disposable ones can cause allergy because of dust since they are stored in a warehouse before reaching us.” said Dr Soh, the founder and director of the Healthsprings group of family practice and medical aesthetic clinics.
For fabric mask, the filtration effectiveness of the cloth masks is generally lower than that of medical masks and respirators, but they still provide some protection if they are well-designed and used correctly. There are also multi-layer cloth masks that are made up of water-resistant fabric with good amount of threads and finer weave for extra protection, that is designed to fit well around the face.
Airtight masks that provide more airtight protection such as N95 respirator, can lead to skin irritation and should not be used by the general public. They are only suitable for use by healthcare personnel (HCP).
How to prevent Maskne?
1) Consider cotton and light weight fabrics masks
They are generally more breathable and comfortable, and at the same time, you can save the earth! It is also advisable to wash your masks daily, preferably with a non-scented soap if you have sensitive skin.
For some reasons if you have to wear disposable face mask,
a) Try changing to a new one every 4 to 6 hours eg. after meals, to keep your face clean.
b) Take mask ‘breaks’ to allow your skin to breathe.
2) Go for an Anti-Maskne treatment
